Who Are the Classification Societies? An In-Depth Look

Classification societies are organizations that establish and maintain technical standards for the construction and operation of ships and offshore structures. They ensure that these standards are met through rigorous design reviews, surveys, and inspections during the build process and throughout the vessel’s operational life. By providing certification and classification services, these societies play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and environmental compliance of maritime vessels. Their work helps mitigate risks, protect lives at sea, and promote the sustainable development of the maritime industry.The UK authorises 6 classification societies to act as Recognised Organisations (ROs) for the survey and inspection of UK ships.The 6 classification societies authorised as UK Recognised Organisations are:
