Boatbuilding has traditionally relied on highly skilled craftspeople, combining engineering with manual craftsmanship. While these skills will remain essential, robotics is beginning to transform how boats are designed, manufactured and assembled. Over the next decade, advanced automation could become one of the industry’s biggest competitive advantages.

Today’s robots are already being used for precision cutting, CNC machining, welding, composite trimming, painting, polishing and material handling. These systems improve consistency, reduce waste and help manufacturers achieve tighter tolerances while increasing production efficiency.

Composite manufacturing offers particularly strong opportunities. Robotic fibre placement, automated resin application, precision adhesive dispensing and robotic finishing can improve structural quality while reducing labour-intensive processes. As larger composite components become more common, automation will help manufacturers maintain consistent quality across every hull.

Painting and finishing are also well suited to robotics. Automated spraying systems can reduce overspray, improve surface quality and minimise material consumption, while robotic polishing delivers a highly consistent finish on premium yachts.

Future developments are likely to go much further. AI-enabled robots could inspect hulls using machine vision, identify manufacturing defects, measure dimensional accuracy and perform quality assurance in real time. Collaborative robots, or “cobots”, will increasingly work alongside skilled technicians, assisting with heavy lifting, repetitive assembly tasks and precision installations rather than replacing human expertise.

Digital twins, AI, computer vision and smart factory technologies will integrate robotics into fully connected production systems. Manufacturing schedules, inventory management, predictive maintenance and quality control will increasingly be coordinated through intelligent software platforms.

The benefits extend beyond productivity. Robotics can improve workplace safety by taking over hazardous, repetitive or physically demanding tasks, helping boatyards address skilled labour shortages while allowing employees to focus on higher-value engineering and craftsmanship.

For boatbuilders, adopting robotics is no longer simply about reducing costs. It is about improving quality, increasing flexibility and remaining competitive in an industry embracing digital manufacturing. The boatyard of the future is likely to combine traditional craftsmanship with advanced robotics, creating smarter, safer and more efficient production while delivering higher-quality vessels to an increasingly demanding global market.
